Undergraduate Ryan Powanda was named one of 80 students from 60 colleges and universities selected as 2007 Morris Udall Scholars. They were selected from among 434 candidates nominated by 221 colleges and universities on the basis of commitment to careers in the environment, health care or tribal public policy, leadership potential, and academic achievement. Each scholarship provides up to $5,000 for one year. The Morris K. Udall Scholarship and Excellence in National Environmental Policy Foundation was authorized by Congress in 1992 to honor Congressman Udall's legacy of public service. The 2007 Udall Scholars will assemble August 1-5 in Tucson, Arizona, to receive their awards and meet policy-makers and community leaders in environmental fields, tribal health care and governance.
ISAT’s own Patsy Grace Salyers-Baugh is one of six students from JMU who will present exemplary graduate work at the Virginia Council on Graduate Schools (VCGS) Graduate Student Research Forum in Richmond Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2007. The purpose of the forum is to showcase graduate student research from all public universities in the commonwealth. More than 60 students will present their research to state legislators, business leaders and university administrators and will showcase how it may benefit Virginia . Patsy Grace Salyers-Baugh, studied the causes of a severe water shortage in Wise County , Va. , that occurred in October 2005. She found that in addition to a drought and dam construction, water-shortage contributors included the high poverty level, scarcity of local funds for maintenance and the availability of federal funds for expansion.
In February, 2006, ISAT Alumna Brooke Cox won the "SUPERIOR LEADER" award for Rockwell Automation, awarded by the Professional Women's Council. This was awarded to one woman out of the entire Rockwell Automation Company.
In May, 2006, Benjamin Stokes, currently an ISAT junior, was named a Microsoft Student Partner. He went to Seattle for a training session during the summer.
