ISAT in Costa Rica
The CISAT Study Abroad Program in Costa Rica provides many educational benefits to ISAT students, including understanding the fundamentals of energy, its uses and resources, exposure to international energy technologies, experience and understanding associated with living and working in an international setting; and applied, interdisciplinary course experience that integrates the technical, social, and economic dimensions of international setting.
ISAT in Malta
The 6-credit ISAT/Geography in Malta program runs every May for 4½ weeks, and comprises an intensive field-study experience (ISAT 416/480 or Geog 450) for 3 credits and the elective course Sustainable Societies taught by JMU and Maltese lecturers. An additional 3 credits can be earned from participation in technical and cultural tours. Projects in Malta address problems involving biotechnology, energy, environment, and geography, and are supported organizations in Malta including the University of Malta ; the Institute for Energy Technology; the Euro-Mediterranean Centre on Insular Coastal Dynamics and the Gaia Foundation for the Protection of the Environment. International Partnership for La Gonave, Haiti
The International Partnership for La Gonave is a group of people in Haiti and the U.S. who have made a long-term commitment to improving life on the island of La Gonave , Haiti , by sharing knowledge, talents and resources with one another. The overall vision is to restore La Gonave to the paradise that it once was. The IPLG facilitates the work of organizations, groups and individuals on La Gonave through a variety of means: We Act as a clearinghouse for information and resources, Encourage discussion among the various groups and individuals; Organize regular meetings and conferences to establish and address goals; Publish a regular newsletter to keep all members informed of projects and activities; Coordinates and carries out projects, including ISAT Senior Capstone projects, and Investigate creative solutions to problems on the island. Philippines Study Abroad
The Philippines Study Abroad program, usually run in the summers, fulfills capstone GEOG 491 and one other class, GEOG 315: Field Studies, GEOG 450: The Philippines Islands, GEOG 490, or GGEOG 200. This field/experiential program is focused more on environmental issues rather than cultural ones. With no classroom at all, it involves strenuous physical activity (up/down) of long duration (4 hrs) hiking, scuba instruction and certification, as well as Island hopping with significant beach time.
