For Your Academic Progress

Requirements of the Majors

The single best source of information on how to graduate is the UNIVERSITY CATALOG in force for the year you entered. If program requirements for a major change while you are in the program, you are guaranteed graduation under the older requirements, or you may switch to the new ones. See the Guide to Catalogs

Access to Course Materials

Each course has a different way to access materials such as additional readings, announcements, review materials for tests, communications with other students and faculty, and on-line tests and quizzes .

Some are available as course web-sites, some through the campus BlackBoard system, some through the Departmental Sharepoint Site and some in files of specific drives of the campus computer systems. Check with your professor on the appropriate source for a specific course. Representative Course Syllabi (not necessarily current)

Advising

  1. Remember that you may always seek advice from ANY faculty member you feel comfortable talking with. They do not have to be in your area of concentration or even in your major department.
  2. FRESHMAN: The Departmental Freshman Advisor is: Dr. Paul Henriksen, the Departmental Student Coordinator. You may see him in his office ISAT/CS 121, call him at 568-2755 or send him at e-mail at henrikpw@jmu.edu
  3. SOPHOMORES: All the faculty are available for advising you. Please don't be shy; stop by and talk to any of us to explore your academic options. Its often good to seek out a second opinion from a faculty member who is NOT grading you at the time.
  4. JUNIORS: As you begin to narrow down your interests, explore widely with many professors. You may want to have multiple advisors, and they do not have to be in the Concentration you choose.
  5. SENIORS: Students majoring in ISAT will choose a Faculty advisor for their senior projects, but remember: The senior project or other capstone experience should be entirely IN YOUR HANDS. You are not required to do a senior project “in your concentration”; and the department encourages integrated projects that require team-work with students having different preparation than you. YOU may choose your “senior project faculty advisor”, and if necessary, change to someone else. An “external project sponsor” is NOT the same as a faculty advisor, and they do not grade your project to receive credit.
