GEOGRAPHIC SCIENCE

The study of Geography involves above all, “spaciality”, the distribution and configuration of important phenomena on the earth:  physical phenomena, such as rocks, natural resources, mountains, rivers and so forth; and human phenomena, such as populations, religious beliefs, ethnic cultures, nations, states, roads, boundaries.  It also studies new “geographies” made possible by new technologies:  web interest groups, political movements.

The ISAT Geography program offers two degrees:

Bachelor of Science in Geographic Science

Bachelor of Arts in Geographic Science

An undergraduate MINOR is also available.

Concentrations in Geographic Science

Applied Geographic Information Systems
Data from remote [satellite] sensing, and positioning systems are combined in Geographic Information systems, which allow analysts to explore spatial and temporal interactions between humans and the environment through visual and spatial analysis, thematic mapping and digital Cartography. A wide range of applications of this technology are possible in the fields of environmental planning, forensics, anthropology, and politics

Global Studies
Geographers interested in the spatial dynamics of cultural, political, population and economic processes will find a home in this concentration.

Environmental Studies
Geographers use cultural, historical and technological tools to understand the complex interactions between the natural resource base and human agency. They specialize in land use planning, recreation planning and/or resource and environmental management.
