New Activities

This is the poster template for the Geospatial Semester Poster Contest.  It's a PowerPoint document with a 2'x3' format that your students can edit.

Solar radiation (.zip)- This is a short activity that allows you to calculate the solar insolation from a digital elevation model.  You can calculate the value at both the summer and winter solstice.

Definition queries (.zip)- This is a very short tutorial (with a dataset) on constructing definition queries (using a query to limit what is visible in a data layer).

Interpolation tips (Word)- This MS Word document contains some tips on interpolating surfaces from data points that you or your students collect.

Online GIS activities (Word) - Looking for things to do with the students home with the flu?  This document lists three activities that can be done with online GIS resources along with deliverables you have the students submit.

GPS drawing (Word)  - This document contains two fun examples of GPS drawings superimposed on aerial imagery.

Projections (PowerPoint) - This is a PowerPoint presentation on the basics of map projections and datums.  It is a solid introduction to the topic and it's contributed by Phil D'Arcangelis, Loudoun County High School

Thinking Spatially (Word) - This is a Word document that explores the topic of spatial thinking.  It includes a short exercise at the end and would be appropriate as a reading assignment or for in-class discussion.  It's also contributed by Phil D'Arcangelis, Loudoun County High School.

Network Analyst (.zip) Four introductory (and short) activities designed to introduce the Network Analyst Extension.  The extension allows you to create routes, provide directions and identify closest facilities.

Map Analysis (.zip)  - This is a set of maps and an activity developed by Rebecca Gentry at Herndon High School to help students build their map critique skills.  It could be used in class or as HW.

Haiti activity (Word) - This document contains an activity Ryan Miller (Washington-Lee, Arlington) designed as a mid-term for his students.  It focuses on the use of GIS in rescue and relief activities after the earthquake in Haiti

Face activity (.zip file) - This is a simple activity (including data) that allows you to interpolate a human face.  It's very short and quite fun.  Thanks to Kathryn and also to Pat Iampietro at California State University Monterey Bay for the data.
