Integrated Science and Technology
Integrated Science and technology focuses on a wide range of factors in the design and maintenance and protection of complex socio-technical systems. It combines coursework in math, computing and technical fields, such as biological, chemical, physical and engineering, with social knowledge of markets, political processes, to solve concrete human problems of food supply, health, environment, energy, manufacturing, transportation and communications.
There are two degrees in ISAT:
Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in ISAT
For a description of the academic program consult the latest catalog or contact Paul Henriksen
You can also combine the B.S. in ISAT with a Masters in Business Administration (MBA), from the business school. For more information, contact Dr. Anne Henriksen
Master of Science (M.S.) in ISAT
For a description of the academic program consult the latest catalog or contact Dr. Barbara Gabriel
Concentrations for ISAT Degree
BioSystems
Biotechnology is the use of biological processes to create products, specifically for applications in medicine, food, and agriculture.Energy
Energy comes from both fossil sources [natural gas, coal, oil] and renewable sources [solar wind, crops], These sources are subject to processing, and energy products are distributed over market and transmission networks spanning the nation and globe.Engineering and Manufacturing
This sector involves the product realization process: from concept, through product design, materials choice, to the manufacturing process itself, and compliance with environmental and workplace regulation. Computers are used throughout, to automate drafting, and robots, to control the manipulation of materials, and to facilitate business functions such as tracking inventory and scheduling production.Environment
This sector involves application of environmental and biological sciences to practical problems of managing natural resources, conserving wild species, and improving the environmental practices of industries.Health Systems
Health care in the United States is in crisis. This concentration studies the complex interaction among disease vectors, doctors, nurses and other health service providers, insurance companies, first-responders, equipment manufacturers, drug companies, and the government medical research, and safety nets of social security, veterans benefits and Medicaid.Information & Knowledge Management
The role of information technologies [computers, software, databases, networks] and knowledge management in society cannot be overestimated. This concentration covers systems analysis and design, systems modeling and simulation, object-oriented software engineering, intelligent systems and data representation.Telecommunications
Telecommunications is technologies and services that permit humans to communicate data and ideas with each other over a distance using digital electronic technology. The focus is on technologies that permit this transmission to occur, including electrical wires and cables, optical fiber, electromagnetic radiation (radio waves), computers, software, satellites, and other devices. Telecom also teaches principles of telecommunications management and the government institutions and standards organizations that regulate telecom technologies to ensure that they serve the public interest.Social Context of Technology and Science*
Instrumentation & Measurement*
*These concentrations must be combined with one other from the top list.
