What is ISAT?

ISAT is one of the first programs in the country to offer an integrated approach to studying science and technology, and continues to be recognized as a leading program of its kind.

The mission of the Integrated Science and Technology Department is to empower students to analyze and solve real-world, human problems by integrating scientific, technological, business and social aspects of these problems and to communicate innovative solutions to a diverse audience.

The Students

The ISAT major is designed for students interested in “the big picture” rather than only the details; for students interested in science, math, and technology but not interested in a traditional engineering or science degree; and for students interested in relating many different subjects areas rather than studying just one.

The Faculty

The faculty model ISAT's integrated approach. Nearly 40 faculty have a range of practical, industry, research, and academic experience. Together, ISAT's faculty have expertise in engineering, law, policy, environmental science, biosystems, physics, alternative energy, history of science and technology, and much more. Each study area in ISAT has a devoted team of faculty. The ISAT faculty provides students a rich opportunity to pursue their own combination of interests from within one academic program. Curriculum

The ISAT curriculum involves a range of study areas, called sectors. In the first two years, ISAT majors explore each sector. In the third year, students choose three sectors to study further. In the final year, students concentrate on at least one of these sectors. Throughout the curriculum, classes focus on problem solving, communication, leadership, and teamwork. Reasons for ISAT

The ISAT program is a response to the increased recognition that solving today’s and tomorrow’s complex problems requires an ability to integrate various subjects, skills, and perspectives. Effective leaders in business, government, and nonprofit sectors are able to bring together individuals with specific knowledge and skills to work together to overcome complex challenges. ISAT students learn to become such leaders.
